Duke CIT Instructional Technology Showcase 2010

Every year Duke University's Center for Information Technology hosts an Instructional Technology showcase in which various speakers and faculty come together to share and present innovative and creative technology being used in and outside of the classroom. This year the symposium was held on Friday, April 30th and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend. Here I will provide brief outlines of the various sessions I attended.

Tech Support Across Timezones: How to provide better support to student's studying abroad

During the month of March one of the largest projects that I was working on was a report on overseas ThinkPad support for students studying abroad. As a student that studied abroad myself and a student that also experienced problems with my ThinkPad while abroad this was a topic I have a great deal of interest in. To create my report I began by surveying the juniors at ThinkPad distribution, which is when they trade in their ThinkPad from freshman year for a new one, which in this case takes place in January right after they have returned from their semester away.

Adventures of the SPITI Committee

So, I know I am long overdue for an update on here...and have some great notes to blog on from our last leadership luncheon with Sylvia Oberle. That will have to wait a few more days, but in the meantime I wanted to write about a particular committee that I have been quite involved with over the past few weeks and that I have come to know and love over the past 6 months.

Happy New Year all! I hope that everyone had a fabulous holiday and is enjoying the chilly weather that this January has brought us so far. The Wake Forest Fellow’s wasted no time getting back to business and enjoyed yet another inspirational leadership luncheon last Thursday the 7th. A Few (Overdue) I.S Updates!

Well it has been a few weeks since my last entry so for the sake of catching up I am going to briefly summarize a few of the most recent happenings in the world of Information Systems at Wake Forest University.

Reynolda House: Allison Perkins on Location, Learning and Leading

A couple of weeks ago the Fellows had the opportunity to meet with another intriguing and inspiring Wake Forest community leader. On a blue-skied and sunny Tuesday morning I made my way over to a place that I wish I could say I frequented a little more often; Reynolda Village. With the vibrantly colored leaves and just slightly chilled November air there is truly no better time to experience the village.

Wisdom from Dean Bill Applegate: Goals, mentors, and doors, oh my!

On Tuesday, October 20th the Wake Forest fellows were lucky enough to lunch with yet another incredible leader in the Wake Forest community. Currently serving as both the President of WFU Health Sciences and the Dean of Wake Forest Medical School, William B. Applegate can easily be described as one of the most inspiring leaders we have met with thus far. The time that Dean Applegate spent with us led to three pages of scribbled notes that I will highlight here in the attempts at sharing just an ounce of the wisdom he shared with us.

Maintaining the Balance: Lessons from Dean Steve Reinemund

Last Monday, as part of our Leadership Luncheon's series, the Fellows were given the opportunity to share a sandwich with one of the most inspirational leaders at Wake Forest University, Steve Reinemund. Serving as the dean of the newly merged business schools, Steve Reinemund is easily recognized as one of the most innovative leaders of our time. Praised for his ability to mentor and facilitate corporate relationships on all levels, Dean Reinemund shared a variety of insights with us, including his personal framework regarding successful professional and personal development.

Empowering Women in the Workplace

This past week I attended an Empowering Women event hosted by the Professional Development Center here at Wake Forest. The event featured Janet Ward Black of Ward Black Law, an accomplished lawyer and former NC Bar Association President. Mrs. Black spoke about career building in general as well as women’s past, present and future roles in the work place. As one of only four women to ever serve as the NC Bar Association President, Mrs. Black shared with us several personal stories as well as pieces of advice for career development and improvement. Some cornerstone suggestions Mrs.

The Current Student Perspective of I.S

For my first several weeks as Information Systems Fellow I was charged with the task of gathering and reporting on data regarding the current student perspective of Information Systems at Wake Forest University. Last Friday, September 11th I presented my report and findings to the board of directors within I.S. If you have interest in my report please contact me directly, however I will use this as an opportunity to highlight the main discoveries I compiled and reported on.
