itSMF Fusion 2009 wrap-up and lessons learned

Well, itSMF Fusion 2009 is over.  The only one I'd been to previously was itSMFusion 2007 in Charlotte, NC.  (If you're interested, see blog entries from 2007 and from 2009.)  I went to the academic forum for the first time, as well as the conference proper.

First off, Gaylord Hotels are BIG!!  Check out this movie from ServiceSphere:

Twitter was in force this time--see the twitter hashtag #fusion09.

I had planned on going to all the 7/7:30 AM sessions but I only went to the Monday morning 7AM.  After that I wanted the sleep.

Next year, I'd like to

  • go again to the academic forum, and try to liaise between the academic forum and the itSMF Higher Ed SIG
  • review the presentations in advance if possible, to understand which ones to attend
  • get more peer feedback on what presentations to attend
  • bring more vegan food (I am vegan and had to stretch my diet a bit this time--and actually ate all 12 snack bars I brought)
  • not bring my digital camera
  • research other hotel rates and shuttles (the conference hotel rate may actually be more expensive than going straight to the hotel--and same thing for the shuttle)
  • go ahead and plan for downtime--time to recuperate
  • consider taking notes directly with my computer or a loaner tablet (if such a thing exists)
  • Remember to take into account when the final keynote closes (I didn't realize it went through 1:45 PM, and my flight left at 3 PM, so I had to skip the final keynote)
