Predecessors/Before You Begin

Only individuals can be "ITIL certified." If your University would like to be certified as an "IT Service Management" shop, ISO 20000 is probably the most appropriate certification.

ITIL Certifications

There are two different sets of certifications: ITIL v2 and ITIL v3. Both these sets of certifications are given by EXIN (primary for US) and ISEB.

In the US, EXIN then has several agencies, such as Prometric, that are allowed to administer the certification exams. Some certifications require in-person contact hours; others can be taken "cold" as an exam, with no mandatory training hours. In other words, you can take the ITIL foundations exam just by registering through Prometric, going to a Prometric testing center, and taking the test.

ITIL v2's certifications include

• ITIL v2 Foundations
• ITIL v2 Practitioner
• ITIL v2 Service Manager

ITIL v3's certifications include

• ITIL v3 Foundations
• ITIL v3 Foundations bridge (for people with an ITIL v2 foundations certificate)
• ITIL v3 Manager bridge (for people with an ITIL v2 service manager certificate)
• (others to be named later)

The two biggest "ITIL implementation" expenses are typically tool implementation and training.
